The Half Call

About and contact

Built for the person doing it at eleven at night

The Half Call started from one observation: almost none of the seven weeks before an opening is spent on the thing anybody joined an amateur company to do. It is spent on derivation and coordination — and both of those are work a machine should be doing.

The name

The half is the half-hour call: the moment, thirty-five minutes before curtain, by which every member of the company must be in the building and signed in. It is the instant a roomful of individuals becomes a company. It seemed the right thing to name this after.

What we believe about this market

Amateur and community theatre is not a smaller, sadder version of the professional kind. It is a different thing with its own standards, its own audiences and, frequently, better discipline about the get-out. What it does not have is anyone paid to do the paperwork.

So the product is built around the stage manager rather than the director, priced per production rather than per person, and designed to be readable by a sixty-year-old on an iPad in a badly lit hall. Those three choices decide most of the rest.

We would rather tell you what is not finished than find out later that you committed a production to something that was not there. The current state of the build is on the home page, kept honest.

Who you are contracting with

This block is unfinished and must not ship as it stands. It needs the trading name, the legal entity or sole-trader status, the registered or service address, any company number, and the confirmed mailbox addresses used above — contact@thehalfcall.com is assumed throughout this site and has to actually exist and be monitored.

Consumer-facing distance selling carries specific obligations to identify the seller and give a contact address, and the merchant of record’s own requirements sit on top of that. Get this drafted rather than guessed.
